Bluebeard's dead wives in a
1901 film production by Georges Méliés. The striking
scene captures the gruesome chamber of death
discovered by Bluebeard's
eighth wife when her
curiosity compelled her to investigate.
The Klaw & Erlanger production of Mr. Bluebeard was
nothing like this. I've included it because I
think it's interesting that a story with such a grim
baseline (depicting a good bit of horror in this
photo, without a single chainsaw), lay at the foundation
of a comical holiday
performance for children. The Mr. Bluebeard
that appeared on the stage at the Iroquois Theater
in 1903 was about laughter and lights, singing and
pretty girls.
