Two months before the
Iroquois fire, the Chicago Fire Department put out a
blaze on the roof of the Chicago Athletic
Association. Getting to the fire required climbing
ten stories on fire escapes. Ten. On
fire escapes. Hanging on the outside of a

Just below the fire, a banquet was in progress,
celebrating the Chicago Gynecological society's
twenty-fifth
anniversary. The doctors' celebration went on without
interruption while the fireman turned their hoses on a
shed containing a ventilation fan that had short-circuited.
