Two Chicago Turners,
James Schneider and Herman Dreisel,
died in the 1903 Iroquois Theater fire.
Both were of German heritage and got to Chicago by
way of Clinton, Massachusetts and St. Paul
Minnesota. In Chicago they taught in public
schools and at Turnverein gymnasiums.

They attended the theater matinee with their wives and
family members of Dreisel's wife who were visiting
in Chicago over the Christmas holiday from their
home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Six in the party
died in the theater auditorium and one, James
Schneider, made it out and to a hospital where he
died from severe injuries.
