The Wellington Hotel was among the advertisers in the
Iroquois Theater souvenir program distributed at the November 23, 1903 premier. This was where the
Van Ingen
family from Kenosha, Wisconsin stayed while they were in Chicago in Dec, 1903. Their oldest son,
Schuyler, was unable to attend the matinee and was going to meet his parents and five siblings for
dinner at the Wellington that evening.

All five of his siblings died
and his parents were badly burned and hospitalized.
At the corner of Wabash Ave and Jackson Blvd., the
Wellington was originally named the Matteson Hotel
and opened in 1873. It catered to the wealthy and
famous. The building was demolished in 1915.
